A Bumper Sticker for Your Consciousness

Here’s a short video where I share a story and reflections on how we can open to something more than the identities we usually define ourselves by.

I hope you enjoy!

  1. Loved your bumper sticker Sarah! And love even more your choice of words “holding your thoughts lightly”. That is exactly what helps me. When I close my eyes to meditate or when I am particularly anxious about something I literally hold my hands with my palms up and my fingers spread wide open. This physical stance really really helps me to let go of problems, ideas, even people who I can cling to (I am a 6). When I am in this posture it is easier then to hear my thoughts and step back from a distance. Sometimes I picture my thoughts coming from a different person (that person looks like a cartoon character of me lol) and I can just listen. Sounds a little crazy but it works for me.

    1. I love the hand gesture and the receptive state it sounds like it brings on. Getting separation from our usual patterns of thinking and feeling, like externalizing your thoughts in the cartoon-self, allows new experiences of our ourselves to rise up. I think seeing the patterned self in a humorous way can disarm the agreement or rejection dilemma we can get into with our patterns. Thanks for sharing!

  2. hello dear sister, so lovely and profound…in the last 4 years i have been really holding the possibility that all the stories others tell aren’t necessarily my truth, AND…that all the stories i tell myself may not be real either. it is truly liberating…and sometimes a lil scary…cause then…what is my truth???

    1. Thanks Hope. Yes: liberating AND scary. I’m very excited about your question “what IS my truth?” And right along with it: “How do I know the difference between my thoughts/stories and my truth?” Love that territory. Thanks for sharing.

  3. very beautiful and inspiring …… thank you for sharing these lovely insights …
what I tell myself is that I am not my personality – the real me is enclosed in a timeless space within my heart that existed before I was born and will exist again after I am dead –
this stills me and quiets me and gives me a new perspective on what I’m thinking and feeling – I can reorient to the One within me …. my voice changes , my posture changes , my thinking shifts … I become not me, I become me.

  5. Thank you for this reminder! I really appreciate your videos Sarah.. Your stories and sharing of your process gives me companionship and insight, a sense of co-exploring. I’ve also said to myself “Holding strategies lightly and Needs tightly”. It helps me let go of certain thoughts needing to be the only truth if that makes sense. When I notice I’m attached to a way of thinking, or a thought, I can notice, pause and slow down and look to what the vale is that is underneath – very NVC way. It gives me peace knowing that I don’t know everything, and my thoughts are only there to help point me to some underlying value that wants to be expressed, noticed and cared for.

    1. I appreciate your sharing Marcia. I like how when we admit we don’t know everything we can open to something new coming in. I love the looking for the underlying value or desire.
